St. Patrick’s Day is a day synonymous with green clothes, green food, green beer, bagpipes, kilts, and four leaf clovers. Unfortunately, St. Patrick’s Day is also associated with…DUIs. St. Patrick’s Day is considered the fourth largest drinking holiday in the US (just behind New Year’s Eve, Christmas Day, and the 4th of July). Beer sales increase approximately 152.5% for the sacred Celtic holiday and and an estimated 13 million pints of Guinness will be consumed worldwide.
Life is too short to not enjoy an annual excuse to drink. However, it’s important to drink responsibly, especially when the penalties for a DUI can be fairly harsh in Kentucky. First time offenders may face anywhere between $200 to $500 in fines or jail time up to 30 days. In addition to these punishments, a driver will also have their license revoked for at least 30 days. To help prevent DUIs this year, Baldani Law Group is offering $5 discounts off of Uber rides on St. Patrick’s Day for the first 70 Lexington residents to enter for one. More details can be found below.
St. Patrick’s Day Drunk Driving Statistics
St. Patrick’s Day can be a very dangerous time to be out on the road. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were 60 people killed nationwide because of drunk driving accidents on St. Patrick’s Day in 2016. Over 700 deaths occurred as a result of drunk driving on St. Patrick’s Day from 2006 to 2010. Roughly 80% of alcohol-related accidents involved drivers with blood alcohol levels that were nearly twice the legal limit.
If the risk of injury or death doesn’t scare you, the penalties associated with drunk driving should. Loss of a license in combination with jail time or fines can seriously impact both your personal and professional life. Lexington police will be out in full force on St. Patrick’s Day and there will likely be a few DUI checkpoints to be on the lookout for.
Play It Safe And Let Uber Be Your Designated Driver
If you plan on drinking St. Patrick’s Day Weekend, the best thing you can do for your safety and the safety of others out on the road is to find a designated driver or take an Uber or Lyft. We urge all Lexington residents to take the following safety precautions:
- Designate a sober driver or make plans for alternate transportation before the festivities begin
- Never let your friends drive home drunk. Arrange safe transportation for them if they are unable to do so themselves
- Don’t get into a vehicle with an intoxicated driver
- Buckle up and remain vigilant to help prevent injury or harm in a drunk driving accident
